FAQs

What is it?

The Recreation Facility Expansion and Enhancement initiative (aka Recreation Facilities initiative) is a referendum on the upcoming April 6-11 ballot to determine whether access to the basketball and tennis courts, aquatics center and recreation field should be expanded to all students, rather than continue to be on a membership-only basis, as it currently stands.

If the initiative passes, a $40 fee will automatically be charged to student accounts each semester, similar to fees paid for health services and other campus facilities like the Recreation Center.  The fee will go towards staffing and maintaining the recreation facilities and fields.

How will it affect me?

If the initiative passes, a new $40 fee charge will appear in your student account each semester and will be eligible for payment through your financial aid funding or your existing method of paying your balance.

Students who were already paying membership fees up to $100 per semester to access all of the facilities (for example, students participating in outdoor intramural events) will save $60 per semester with this lower fee.

You will have access to the aforementioned facilities during specific hours in which the facilities are open to all students and you will be able to borrow equipment such as basketballs, soccer balls and tennis equipment as part of this new arrangement.

What is the daily drawing all about?

In order to encourage as many students as possible to vote, we will be holding a total of 3 incentive drawings for each day of the election where voters can win official UC Merced Athletics apparel and free registration to Outdoor Adventures.  You can enter the drawing by voting.  Please note that your vote will remain anonymous and it does not matter how you vote (whether you vote for or against the initiative), you can still participate in the drawing.
