Membership to the Joseph Gallo Recreation Center and the Student Activities & Athletics Center is included in student fees for all currently registered graduate and undergraduate students. Faculty and staff memberships are available for $35 per month. The faculty and staff membership provides full access to the entire recreation facility along with allowing the member to participate in Intramural Sports and receive member rates for Outdoor Adventure programs.
How To Join
To be able to use either facility, faculty and staff members must purchase gym memberships in person at the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation and Wellness Center.
Faculty and staff members can also register their spouses or domestic partners for gym memberships. If you wish to pay through a monthly payroll deduction please see the front desk for more information. There are no long-term contracts for memberships.
Currently enrolled UC Merced students do not need to register for memberships because it's included in your Campus Recreation Fee. The only exception to this policy is during the summer, any UC student not enrolled in one of the summer sessions MUST purchase a summer membership to use the facilties.

People in the following categories must register for a gym membership in person at the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation Center.
- UC Merced alumni (affiliate rate)
- UC alumni (affiliate rate)
- Spouse/domestic partner of a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student
- Campus affiliate (i.e. temporary UC Merced employee, Hallmark Group members)
All members of the Campus and Recreation program, the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation and Wellness Center and the Student Activities and Athletics Center must be 18 years or older.
Refunds and Payroll Deduction Cancellation
Employee memberships paid through payroll deduction are nonrefundable. Payroll deducted memberships are paid at the end of the month used; therefore, refunds cannot be processed. Members may request to stop their payroll deductions and cancel their gym memberships. If the request comes after the 15th of the month, the entire month's membership will be deducted from the payroll. Please contact the Recreation and Athletics Office to discontinue your payroll deduction.
Refunds for members who pre-pay for their memberships will be issued refunds according to the follwoing schedule, minus a $5 processing fee:
Annual Pre-Paid Membership:
- Cancelled within three months: 75 percent refund
- Cancelled within six months: 50 percent refund
- Cancelled within nine months: 25 percent refund
- Cancelled after nine months: no refund
Semester Pre-Paid Membership:
- Cancelled within one month: 75 percent refund
- Cancelled within two months: 50 percent refund
- Cancelled after two months: 15 percent refund
Annual pre-paid memberships may be refunded for the follwing reasons and require documentation: termination of employment; transfer off-campus; formal leave of absence and sabbaticals; changes in medical conditions resulting in physical limitations.
